Middle-earth™ Halfling™ Marathon FAQ

Entering Online

  • How much is it to enter?

    The Eleventy-first 11.1km course is $179 to enter, and the Halfling Marathon 21.1km is $229. 

  • When do registrations close?

    Registrations will be open online until the 1st April or capacity numbers are reached. Same day registrations may be available if we have remaining capacity.

  • Do you have different categories for Runners and Walkers?

    Yes. When you enter the event, you can choose to either enter the Run or Walk category for each distance. The start times for the Walking category will be staggered slightly. Participants in the Walking categories are required to walk the full distance, and cannot run a portion of the course. 

  • Are there age restrictions or divisions for each race distance?

    The Middle-earth Halfling Marathon has two race distances and all participants will be running together without any divisions for age or gender.

    Registrations are open to ages 16+ for both race distances.

  • What is included in my registration?

    Included in your registration for the Middle-earth Halfling Marathon is entry into the race distance of your choosing, a specially designed finishers medal, an exclusive branded souvenir Stein and a collapsible reusable water cup for use at the water stations across the course. Please note: there will not be any single use cups or plastic at the water or aid stations to reduce our waste for the event.

  • I can't make it anymore. What do I do?

    If you are unable to make it for the event, you have the option of Transferring your Registration to someone else up until 19 March 2022. Click here for more information.

  • Do you have a COVID-19 Policy for the event if it cannot go ahead as planned?

  • Can I change my race category or transfer my registration to a friend?

    Yes you can change your category and transfer your registration up until 12 March 2022 by logging into to your account on the Event Plus system. See our terms and conditions for this event for more information. 

  • Do you have Corporate or Teams discounts available?

    We are not offering corporate or teams discounts at this time.

  • Do you require vaccination from COVID-19 to enter the Middle-earth Halfling Marathon?

    Under the COVID-19 Protection Framework, all competitors and spectators for the Middle-earth Halfling Marathon will require proof of COVID-19 Vaccination. This will be a requirement for anyone over the age of 12 entering any event zone areas. More information (including details of exemptions) will be added to this page as details are confirmed from the NZ Government. 


  • I’m planning to drive to The Shire’s Rest, will there be parking?

    Parking at The Shire’s Rest is limited and only available for participants who select this option at time of registration. An official parking pass will be issued and emailed to participants who select this option before the event and must be presented on arrival on the event day.

  • What are the Transport options?

    We will be offering free return transport options from central locations in Matamata and Cambridge and there will be ample parking available at each location. A full schedule and confirmed locations will be shared on the Plan Your Adventure page soon.


  • Where can I register myself before the event?

    You will be able to check in/register for the event at The Hub, located at The Shire's Rest, 501 Buckland Road Matamata, from 12.00pm - 6.00pm on Friday 1 April 2022, or on race day from 9am - 1.00pm on Saturday 2 April 2022. 

  • What time is registration open on the Friday and Saturday?

    You will be able to check in/register for the event at The Hub, located at The Shire's Rest, 501 Buckland Road Matamata, from 12.00pm - 6.00pm on Friday 1 April 2022, or on race day from 9am - 1.00pm on Saturday 2 April 2022. 

  • I registered myself on Friday night, When should I arrive on Saturday?

    If you have registered on Friday then you do not need to re-register on Saturday morning. Arrive at least 45 minutes before your race start time, to allow time for parking, a quick warm up & the race briefing.

  • I requested parking at The Shire's Rest as part of my registration. What do I need to do now?

    If you want to check which parking/transport option you requested as part of your registration, can check this by logging into your Event Plus account. If you're unsure or would like to change your parking/transport option, you can contact our team at info@halflingmarathon.com.

    We will be in touch with all participants who have requested parking at The Shire's Rest and/or transport a little closer to the event with more information and your official parking pass/instructions. 

Race Day

  • When is prize giving?

    Prizegiving will take place at the Halfling Event Village on race day 2 April 2022 at 6.30pm. 

  • I have young children, is there a child-minding service available at the MEHM?

    No, sorry. 

  • Is there somewhere that I can leave my belongings while I’m taking part in my event?

    Yes, we have a secure, dry, gear check area where you’ll tag your bag with your name and race number and the MEHM staff will look after it for you until you’re ready to collect it.

  • Do I need to bring cash to purchase food and beverages at the event or is there eftpos?

    Cash is king though some of our food suppliers will have eftpos options available.

  • Will there be food and beverage options available at the event?

    There sure will be – We will have food trucks available onsite as well as The Shires Rest available for food.

    Our good friends at Good George will be onsite with a range of alcoholic & non-alcoholic (water, electrolyte and soft drinks) beverages available for purchase at the event.

  • Can I bring some friends/family along to support?

    Of course, we would love for you to bring your fellowship along to support. Supporters and spectators will be able to access the Halfling Event Village at The Shire’s Rest throughout the race duration and will be able to access the start and finish lines at set times. Only race participants will be able to access the Movie Set and surrounding farmland during the race. A full event day schedule will be shared closer to the time.

  • Will spectators be able to enter Hobbiton Movie Set to see the runners?

    Not during the event. Only event participants will enter the Movie Set as a part of their event course. Spectators will be able to access the Halfling Village at The Shire's Rest, and the start and finish line zones at Buckland Landing. 

    We will be offering a range of special exclusive tour experiences for spectators and participants on the Sunday to enjoy a visit to the Movie Set on the Sunday, or the chance to join one of our regularly scheduled tours at a special rate. You will be sent information on how to access these exclusive deals and tours in the lead up to the event. 

  • What is the terrain for the course?

    The Middle-earth Halfling Marathon is an off-road trail running adventure. The terrain for both the 11.1km and the 21.1km course varies from grassy fields and dirt farm tracks, to compacted dirt/clay tracks with some scattered cobblestone areas on the Movie Set. Many areas of the course cover uneven ground, including some low level steps on a steady incline on the Movie Set. All runners and walkers must follow the same path for the duration of their event. The course is not suitable for wheelchairs.
