Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Hobbiton open at Alert Level 2?

At this stage we are working towards reopening for tours on 30 May 2020. Online bookings from 30th May onwards are now available via our website for our Hobbiton Movie Set Tour from The Shire's Rest with three daily departures at 9.30am, 12.00pm and 2.30pm.

We are also able to offer Private Tours on request. Our Evening Banquet Tour is currently suspended, but we are taking bookings from December 2020 with a reduced number of departures.

We look forward to welcoming New Zealanders back to the Shire!

  • What health and safety precautions are Hobbiton taking when tours start again?

In February and March this year, we increased our cleaning and sanitisation practices and will continue to do so when we re-open for as long it is needed. These include permanent installation of hand sanitiser units in all of our buses and vehicles and an increased cleaning schedule of all public and staff facilities/equipment. Our team will not have physical contact with our visitors while on tour, this includes shaking hands, high fives and any handling of visitor's personal belongings (e.g cameras, phones) during tours. We can offer contactless payment options within our Ticketing, Café and Shop.

We will be collecting information from all of our visitors for contact tracing purposes. This information will only be retrieved for contact tracing needs if required, and will not be shared or stored for marketing purposes.

Hobbiton Movie Set reserves the right to adapt the tour experience and/or split parties of more than 10 people on to separate departures to ensure physical distancing is possible while travelling to and from the Movie Set, as well as reducing the number of tours on the Movie Set at a time.

To protect the health and safety of our staff and customers, Hobbiton staff reserve the right to deny entry to our venues and tour experiences to any persons and groups exhibiting any potential COVID-19 symptoms (including but not exclusive to fever, cough and shortness of breath). If you or someone in your group are experiencing symptoms, please advise our staff immediately via phone or email before arriving onsite.

We will continue to review these practices and take advice from the New Zealand Government and industry.

  • Do I have to book a tour ahead of time?

We recommend booking ahead of time so you don't miss out, especially if you're planning to visit on the weekend as this is our busiest time.

We are currently offering a minimum of three daily tour departures (9.30am, 12.00pm & 2.30pm), and if these are fully booked we may not always be able to offer additional tours. It's best to check our website ahead of time and make a booking just in case.

If you need to change your tour time, we can amend a booking up to 2 hours before. View our Ts & C's and cancellation policy here.

  • When tours resume, will The Shire's Rest Cafe be open?

At this stage we are planning for the cafe to be open when tours resume however we will limit the capacity and will have a reduced menu on offer with additional hygiene practices in place.

  • How far in advance can we book a tour?

At this stage we are able to accept bookings up to 12 months in advance via our website.

  • Can I still book a Tour + Meal combo or have lunch at The Green Dragon Inn during my tour?

Unfortunately we are no longer able to offer our Tour + Meal combo or Marquee Festive Feast meal option in conjunction with our tours. The Green Dragon Inn will continue to offer a limited range of food items to purchase during your tour, or you are welcome to purchase something to eat from our café located at The Shire’s Rest either before or after your tour.

  • Do Hobbiton still offer tour options departing from Matamata i-SITE and Rotorua?

We are not currently able to offer transfer options from Matamata i-SITE or Rotorua. Our only tour departure option is from The Shire's Rest.
