COVID-19 Update

Last updated 25 November 2021

The Matamata area, where Hobbiton Movie Set is located, is currently in COVID-19 Alert Level 2.

The Movie Set is OPEN and tours are operating 7 days a week with increased precautions in place. We will continue to review our tour operations in line with government guidelines and changes regularly.

We look forward to sharing our slice of real Middle-earth with you!

Current Alert Level Settings

  • Alert Level 2

Under COVID-19 Alert Level 2 Hobbiton Movie Set is OPEN 7 DAYS.

Our 2-hour day tours are able to operate with three minimum daily departures in Alert Level 2. We will have additional health & safety precautions in place to keep our staff and customers safe at this time. This may include reduced group sizes, increased cleaning practices, contact tracing, mask use and more. We constantly review our practices against the most current government guidelines so we are able to offer a safe and world-class experience for our guests.

Evening Banquet Tours, Second Breakfast Tours and special events such as International Hobbit Day and Beer Festival are not possible during COVID-19 Alert Level 2. If you have an affected booking with us on one of these tours, we will be in touch to discuss your options.

Our cancellation policy is flexible and can be viewed here.

  • Health & Safety precautions in Level 2

    Increased Cleaning Practices
We have increased our daily cleaning practices, including sanitising high touch surfaces in our facilities multiple times a day and sanitising our buses between each tour.

    Contact Tracing
Please check in on the NZ Covid Tracer App QR code on display, and an alternative paper contact tracing system on arrival at Hobbiton Movie Set. This data is being handled with care and will be destroyed in line with Government guidelines.

    Hand Sanitiser
We have installed permanent hand sanitiser units across all sites, including on our buses and on the movie set. Please ensure you use these when entering and exiting venues across our site.

    Masks
While masks and face coverings are not a requirement while on group or charter tours at this time, we are following government advice and will be encouraging our visitors to wear a mask or face covering while on our buses transporting to and from the Movie Set and when in any of our venues including our cafe, retail store and The Green Dragon Inn when you are not eating or drinking. If you do not have a mask when visiting us, please advise one of our staff members and one will be provided for you. We have a supply of disposable masks available for visitors on request available at our ticketing counter and cafe.

    Social Distancing
Group sizes for our tours are reduced in Level 2 to allow for social distancing. Our drivers and guides will manage the seating, loading and unloading of our vehicles to allow for distancing between groups. Our team may choose not to have physical contact with our visitors while on tour, this may include shaking hands, high fives and any handling of visitor's personal belongings (e.g cameras, phones) during tours.

  • I have a booking but am unable to travel due to restrictions. Can I get a refund?

If your booking is affected by travel restrictions and you are unable to join us on your scheduled tour due to alert level restrictions, please contact our team to discuss your options. Have your booking reference and date of visit on hand.

Read our terms and conditions and cancellation policy here.

Hobbiton Movie Set under the new COVID-19 Protection Framework

The health and safety of our staff, visitors and the wider community is our priority. The best way to ensure the well-being of our community, visitors and staff is to require people entering Hobbiton Movie Set venues, tours and events to be vaccinated.

The new COVID-19 Protection Framework will come into effect at 11.59pm on Tuesday 2 December. From 3 December, all people and visitors to Hobbiton Movie Set (including staff, contractors and visitors to our offices) will need to be vaccinated against COVID-19. We will check visitors' My Vaccine Pass at the entrance to The Shire's Rest, 501 Buckland Road, Matamata. Children under 12 will be exempt as they cannot current be vaccinated.

We will continue to follow the advice and regulations of the New Zealand government, and will continue to review our policies and processes regularly.

Additional health and safety precautions under the COVID-19 Protection Framework:

  • Wear a mask. Please wear a face covering when inside any of our venues, or on our buses.
  • Check in. You are required to check in. You can do this through the NZ COVID Tracer app or manually upon entry to our venues.
  • Maintain physical distancing. Please practice physical distancing from people you don't know.
  • Sanitise. Dispensers are located throughout our sites, and we’re also cleaning high touch surfaces regularly.
  • Follow Covid-19 health measures. Stay home if you’re sick, cover coughs with your elbow, and wash your hands regularly.

COVID-19 Protection Framework FAQs

  • Do you require vaccination from COVID-19 to enter Hobbiton Movie Set?

From 3 December 2021, Hobbiton Movie Set will require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for all visitors on arrival to our site. This will be a requirement for anyone over the age of 12 entering any of our venues, joining any of our tour experiences or attending any of our events. We understand that not all ticketholders with bookings in place after this date will have a COVID-19 vaccination certificate, so will be offering the option to cancel and receive a full refund your booking. To cancel and refund your booking, contact our team. Unless otherwise instructed, refunds will be processed onto the original card they were charged to. Please allow up to 21 days for refunds to appear in your account.

More information (including details of exemptions) will be added to this page as details are confirmed from the NZ Government.

  • Will you allow exemptions?

We acknowledge that not everyone can be vaccinated, and our policy allows for exemptions as defined by the Ministry of Health.

  • What about a negative Covid-19 test – can visitors use that instead of the vaccine pass?

It isn’t something we are currently considering but may be considered for the future as things evolve with the COVID-19 situation in New Zealand. We will continue to take advice and follow guidelines as provided by the New Zealand Government.

  • Will you accept International vaccine passes?

We currently have systems in place to verify New Zealand My Vaccine Passes only but will continue to review our processes and follow guidance from the NZ Government on forms of international proof of vaccination or exemptions.

  • I have feedback, who can I speak with?

    Email feedback@hobbitontours.com
