In 1998, Sir Peter Jackson’s team of location scouts were searching for the iconic rolling hills and lush green pastures of Hobbiton™. An aerial search led them to the Alexander farm, a stunning 1250 acre sheep farm located just outside of Matamata. A short while after, once negotiations were complete, the crew began the nine month quest to bring Hobbiton to life, ready for the filming of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy and later The Hobbit Trilogy.
20 years later, Hobbiton™ Movie Set has experienced tremendous growth and now welcomes over six hundred thousand visitors from across the globe each year, having established ourselves as a ‘must do’ activity for travellers to New Zealand. Our experience offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for fans and non-fans alike to step into an iconic movie set in its full glory and learn about how a slice of rural New Zealand was transformed into a film-set for one of the most popular film franchises of all time.
At Hobbiton Movie Set, we are proud to now employ over 250 people who work across various aspects of the business – From Reservations and Tour Operations, to Props and Art Department, Sales and Marketing, Administration, Food and Beverage and Maintenance just to name a few.
Our hard-working team blends together a mix of kiwi hospitality, passion and authenticity into everything we do. We work hard to maintain a supportive and fun working environment, with industry perks and training opportunities, plus the option to enjoy a supplied lunch each day and attend multiple staff social events throughout the year.
